What you need to know about gum disease and treatment options

Do your gums bleed when you brush and floss? Do they look swollen and red? If so, chances are you have gum disease. Gum disease gum diseaseshould not be ignored because, over time, it can progress to periodontal disease. Dr. Harry Tatoian in Weymouth, Massachusetts wants you to know all about gum disease and how to reverse it.

Gum disease, also called gingivitis, is completely reversible because it involves just your soft tissue. If you ignore your gum disease, you begin to lose bone around your teeth; at this stage, you have periodontal disease, a condition that is not reversible, only manageable. The key is to practice excellent oral hygiene and remove plaque regularly from your mouth. Plaque contains large amounts of bacteria which produce damaging toxins that can destroy your hard and soft tissue.

Dr. Tatoian wants you to know how to recognize gum disease. You need to look for:

  • Red, bleeding gum tissue
  • Puffy, painful gums
  • Pain when you eat
  • Frequent bad breath

You can reverse gum disease by practicing excellent oral hygiene which includes:

  • Brushing after meals and before bed
  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Visiting Dr. Tatoian every 6 months for checkups, x-rays and professional cleanings

If your gum disease progresses to periodontal disease and you have bone loss, it becomes very difficult to clean your teeth. The small crevice you were able to floss before has now turned into a deep periodontal pocket that floss may not be able to reach. To know if you have periodontal disease, also called periodontitis, you will have all the same signs and symptoms of gum disease, plus these additional ones:

  • Exposed tooth roots and sensitive teeth
  • Loose, mobile teeth
  • Teeth shifting out of position or moving

Periodontal disease treatment includes visiting Dr. Tatoian every 3 to 4 months for supportive periodontal therapy appointments. Periodontal therapy typically includes root planing, a systematic, thorough cleaning of your deep periodontal pocket areas, and smoothing your tooth roots.

It’s important not to ignore your gum disease. You don’t need to fight it alone when help is just a phone call away. It’s time to call Dr. Harry Tatoian in Weymouth, Massachusetts. He can help you reverse your gum disease, so call today!
